Spirit Dolls
Spirit Dolls have been view by many as talismans of the superstitious. Recently I felt moved to make a spirit doll for one of my friends who was at a crossroads in her life. I wasn't sure just what I hoped for the doll to accomplish, but as I beaded the stuffed cloth doll, the designs just seemed to take on a life of their own and wind this way and that. For the recipient the doll meant many different things than it did to me, but it seemed to help with some life altering decisions. Working with the doll was calming and mesmerizing. Not only do these beaded dolls provide a visual connection, the tactile effect is huge. I've always been calmed by the touch of beads. I love to just run my fingers over any beaded piece whether it's a tapestry, piece of jewelry or spirit doll. I can feel muscles relaxing all through my body, and feel my thoughts focusing on whatever has been troubling me, and many times the answer to a problem becomes crystal clear. Spirit dolls are beaded with a variety of bead sizes and finishes which, when the fingers are played over them stimulate the touch receptors and reflex points in the fingers. The amazing thing is that they can bring unexpected results even from people that don't "believe" in them. The patterns, colors and feel suggest different things to different people, but in the end everyone who picks one up is touched in one way or another |
